Medical Marijuana

“She said her condition requires the whole plant”. Of course it does!

I’m 100% for making pills out of marijuana. If your illness requires the whole plant then you will have to do without. If your illness could can be treated by stem cells harvested from aborted babies–you will have to do without. Just because it can help doesn’t mean it’s an option.
Having a fake doctor on every corner, distributing bogus prescriptions for brownies is not something I want in this state. The whole pot culture makes me sick.
I hope this bill is what is purports to be and not an entry for pot heads.

Lack of Development on Google’s Gmail and Inbox

Google’s Gmail/Inbox is the most used mail system on earth with nearly a billion users. I’ve been using Gmail since it started. The whole time I’ve been dumbfounded by the lack of development Google has given it.

I know email systems pretty well. I worked at Novell on the GroupWise product for over a decade. Novell spent hundreds of millions of dollars on GroupWise R&D. Yet, it was a fraction of the size of Gmail. A billion users? That’s a lot of advertising dollars.

Gmail has never been given a face lift. Every once in a while they would add a new feature. But that is what it was–a new feature. No serious improvements.

Now Google has shifted Gmail users to Inbox and we are seeing the same thing. Even old functionality is missing. A key item many people use is groups. The ability to email a group. That ability is not in Inbox. Inbox has been out for almost a year. It makes no sense to me. Adding the “group” functionality should take no time at all. In fact, they shouldn’t have released Inbox without it. Thousands of people have requested it to no avail.

Another item we had in Gmail that we lost in Inbox is full screen editing of an email. Now we are confined to a small box instead of being able expand the screen. Once gain, is expanding the screen an insurmountable obstacle for Google developers or do they have no usability testing?

One final vacancy, Inbox has very limited formatting options. You can no longer change your font. YOU CAN’T CHANGE YOUR FONT! You also lost the ability to justify, change text colors, highlight, indent, etc.

Other free email programs have much more functionality. I’m just not a fan of changing email addresses.

8 Verses Most Christians Would Never Guess Come from the Book of Mormon

This post is taken from the blog Aggieland Mormons.

Over the years, I have had many friends from other faiths sincerely question whether Mormons are Christians. I believe their questions often arise because of Latter-day Saints’ distinct belief in the Book of Mormon as additional scripture. Mormons love and revere the Bible as the word of God. We regularly study both the Old and New Testaments in our families and in our church meetings. Our belief in the Book of Mormon as an additional witness of Jesus Christ takes nothing away from the Bible and is not associated with any perceived inadequacies in the Bible. Instead, the Book of Mormon complements the Bible and supports its teachings.

I am grateful for the Book of Mormon’s powerful witness of Jesus Christ and for the way my life has been blessed by its teachings. I have read the Book of Mormon many times and feel strengthened each time I open its marvelous pages. This week, we highlight 8 verses that most Christians would never guess come from the Book of Mormon. Notice the way each verse testifies of the divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ and His mission. If you are interested, please request a free copy of the Book of Mormon on our website.

Project Lockdown

My boy was recently in a high school lockdown. Watching law enforcement search each classroom one at a time seemed inefficient and dangerous. I think there are ways to make that better. Here is an idea I came up with.

Syrian Refugees

Concerning Republicans concerns over accepting Syrian refugees, Obama says, “apparently, they’re scared of widows and orphans”. The president never ceases to amaze me. He is an expert at poking the opposition in the eye. How dare Americans question bringing thousands of Syrians to America? Sure we have watched Syrians burning American flags for the last 40 years. Sure Syria has been a terrorist sponsor for 40 years but how dare we question bringing in trainloads of their people. Mr. President, we are not just talking about widows and orphans.

The administration says the immigrants face many months of screening before being allowed settlement. According to Obama, “only after subjecting them to rigorous screening and security checks.”

I have zero faith in your “rigorous screening.”

“That process includes biographic and biometric security checks – i.e. checking records and doing fingerprinting.” Biographic security checks are interviews.

“Are you a terrorist?”

“Nope.”

“Ok, let’s move on.”

Fingerprinting is only useful if you have previously fingerprinted them. How many people in Syria do we have prints on? Not many.

“Law enforcement, the Pentagon and the intelligence community all vet information provided by and obtained about refugees to help make a determination about whether they will ultimately be allowed to come to the U.S.” A neighbor of mine needed security clearance to work at a local army base. An FBI agent came to my house and interviewed my wife about him. How in the world is the Pentagon going to “vet information provided” by the refugees? Are they going to travel to Syria and interview their neighbors?

What is law enforcement or the Pentagon going to do? Call Bashar al-Assad and ask for birth certificates? I think the administration wants you to believe that the NSA has a voice print of every American flag burner in Syria and that they will match their voice to recorded cell phone conversations with ISIS. Sorry Obama, I don’t buy it.

“The process usually takes between 18 to 24 months.” I believe that. You have a 30 minute interview. The paperwork sits someone’s desk for 18 months and then is accepted. Sitting on a desk for a year doesn’t make the process any more rigorous.

“Syrian refugees go through an enhanced review process on top of that with extra national security checks.” Enhanced! That means the form has a new font.

“All Syrian refugees considered for resettlement in the U.S. are interviewed in person by specially trained staff, mostly in Amman and Istanbul, but also in Cairo and elsewhere.” “Refugees must also undergo health screenings and a cultural orientation before they arrive in the U.S.”

What is there to say about this? If you believe this you are nuts.

“FBI Director James Comey famously admitted last month that the U.S. government has no real way to conduct background checks on refugees. “We can only query against that which we have collected. And so if someone has never made a ripple in the pond in Syria in a way that would get their identity or their interest reflected in our database, we can query our database until the cows come home, but there will be nothing show up because we have no record of them,”

“Even Attorney General Loretta Lynch admitted there were “challenges” to vetting the refugees… without saying what those challenges were.  Like almost everyone else in the Administration, she offered vague assurances that the American government has a “significant and robust screening process in place,””

“The registration process includes in-depth refugee interviews, home country reference checks and biological screening such as iris scans. Military combatants are weeded out.” How are you checking anything from the home country? Iris scans? Iris scans? How useful is that? They are just trying to throw out fancy terms to fool dumb people. “Enhanced”, “Biometric”, “Iris scanning”, “Pentagon going to vet”. Ok, I feel much better about the whole thing.

“Among those who pass background checks, a small percentage (actually its 50%) are referred for overseas resettlement based on criteria designed to determine the most vulnerable cases. This group may include survivors of torture, victims of sexual violence, targets of political persecution, the medically needy, families with multiple children and a female head of household.” Despite their poor math skills, I am absolutely concerned about people in this situation. But 5,000,000 Syrian refugees are not in this category.

Here is a result from a poll of Syrian Refugees:

“In general, do you support or oppose the military airstrikes by the US-led international coalition against Islamic militant groups including ISIL and other groups in Iraq and Syria?” Result: 15% strongly opposed the airstrikes. Another 22% oppose. Source

Let’s get this straight. You are fleeing your country because of ISIS yet you strongly oppose airstrikes against them? Why would that be? It’s because 1/3 of the refugees hate Americans more than the people who tortured them, kicked them out of their house and raped their wives and daughters. Yeah, that’s the kind of people we want coming to America. How are we supposed to trust them?

Why can’t any of these people go to Brazil? They have a booming economy? Malaysia is a huge Muslim country. They’ve taken 5,000.

Russia has been a Syrian ally for decades. Russia made this mess. They are 100% responsible for the mess. They supported the al-Assad family. Russia also fought against US airstrikes on ISIS. To date Russia has taken about 1,000 refugees. Gee thanks!

Mexico is a huge country. They’ve taken about 30. That’s three zero. Way to go Mexico. The world salutes you.

My great grandparents were immigrants. I’m not opposed to immigration. But I’m pretty cynical about accepting people from Syria. I guess it’s a result of decade’s news stories showing Syrians hating America.

UPDATE – September 19, 2016

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. government has mistakenly granted citizenship to at least 858 immigrants who had pending deportation orders from countries of concern to national security

Twitter

A friend recently alerted me that Twitter allows pornography. I was surprised to find that it has tens of thousands of graphic pornographic videos. Despite several layers of protection at my home, these videos were just one click away.

Since this discovery, I’ve been trying to increase our protection. We have several Windows computers, an iPhone, iPad and two Android phones. It is extremely difficult for me to resolve. If you uninstall Twitter from an iPhone you can still use the Safari browser to access the Twitter website. If you block the Safari browser and install K9’s Safe Browser you can still see it. If you block explicit content on the phone you can still see it. I have blocks on my home network but it still gets through.
The only way I was able to block Twitter on my home network was to explicitly enter in twitter.com in my DNS. It’s not just Twitter. Instagram and Vine are the same way. I’m sure there are lots of other vulnerabilities but these are apps teenagers love.
I frankly can’t understand why cell phone OS’s are so terrible at blocking content.

Directv…..all I can say is wow!

Have you ever called Directv? If so, have you noticed that the person you talk to can see a credit that needs to be applied or a discount that you are eligible for but they have to transfer you to another department to apply it. Then when you get to that department they can’t see the credit or discount? They also have no way of sending you to the person you just talked to. If you get their name and ID number that makes no difference.

I like that they have no way of sending you to a supervisor. If you absolutely demand to talk to a supervisor they send you a wasteland of perpetual hold music. I also like that every third person you talk to is a good guy. Super nice and understands that you’ve been mistreated. They calm you down but once again, they have to transfer you to the person who can actually resolve the issue.

There is no doubt management at Directv knows they have created a dishonest system which makes them dishonest as well. All the employees, yes all the employees, know that the company works a wide variety of shell games with the public.

This is Mike White the CEO. “Mike is one of the world’s top CEOs and a great leader who built DIRECTV into a premier TV and video entertainment company spanning the U.S. and Latin America,” If he gets the credit…he gets the blame. He architected their dishonest systems.

michael_white_directv

Since you never get to talk to a manager or supervisor, they have created a system where employees are not accountable, thus blatant lying and deliberate disconnects go unchecked. Their policy is simply to wear you out. I spent 6+ hours on the line with Directv in the last two weeks. I’m got going to bore anyone with details but if you are going to purchase Directv, you need to know what you are getting into.

BTW-Dish is no different. I never found Comcast to act this way. But their level of high definition is way below satellite. RG6 just can’t support it. Perhaps encryption will solve that at some point but it hasn’t yet. So if you want incredible TV you have to dance with the devil(s).

Directv are crooks

I signed up for Directv a year ago. Today I realized on my credit card statement that they had added $42 in charges the last two months. I called about it and was told that I now had NFL Sunday ticket. I told them I never ordered it and that I wanted it removed and a refund for the last two months. They said it couldn’t be removed and that they wouldn’t refund my money. I hit the roof. I went from happy customer to beyond angry instantly.

They said they notified me last May and June that it would be added and that I had to request removal it before it started. I told them I’m on paperless billing and don’t even look at their statements. For all I know their statements were in my spam folder. They didn’t care.

I cancelled and ate the whole charge including the early termination. I just can’t continue to buy services from a company with that kind level of integrity.

Obamacare

This quote has been attributed to Donald Trump but I don’t think he said it. Regardless of who wrote it, I like it because it shows how Democrats run government.

“We’re going to be ‘gifted’ with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don’t, which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress who didn’t read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a Dumbo President who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn’t pay his taxes, for which we’ll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government who has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a Surgeon General who is obese, and financed by a country that is broke!!!!”
